Effectiveness of the Use of Hearing Protective Equipment in Controlling the Blood Pressure of Workers Exposed to Noise in the Production Unit of PT Sinar Sosro, the Deli Serdang Factory Office

Introduction

Noise in the work environment can be one of the risk factors that affect health, including cardiovascular health. In the production unit of PT Sinar Sosro, the Deli Serdang factory office, the noise level measured reached more than 85 dB (A), and the majority of workers do not use hearing protectors. Noise is one of the stressors of the physical environment that can increase blood pressure temporarily through the stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system. If not treated, prolonged exposure can cause hypertension. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the use of hearing protective equipment in controlling the blood pressure of workers exposed to noise above 85 dB (a).

Background and Literature Review

Noise in the work environment is a significant occupational health hazard that can cause hearing loss, cardiovascular disease, and other health problems. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 50% of the world's population is exposed to noise levels that can cause hearing loss. In Indonesia, the Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration reported that noise-induced hearing loss is one of the most common occupational diseases. The use of hearing protective equipment (HPE) is a critical measure to prevent noise-induced hearing loss and other health problems.

Methodology

In this study, the quasi-experimental approach was used with pre-test and post-test designs in one group. The research population involved 85 workers exposed to noise of more than 85 dB (A) for 8 hours a day or 40 hours a week. Through purposive sampling techniques, 34 workers who work on morning shifts are chosen as samples. After being filtered using inclusion and exclusion criteria, 18 workers were chosen as samples that met the requirements for this research. Data is collected by measuring the average level of noise in each production process, as well as measuring the blood pressure of workers before and after working without hearing protective equipment and after using hearing protectors. In addition, interviews were conducted, direct observations, and examination of company documentation.

Results

The results of the intervention using the standard Ear plug ANSI S3.19: 1974 with NRR 25 dB (a) show a change in the average systolic blood pressure of 9.44 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure of 7.78 mmHg. Analysis using the "T" test with SPSS version 13 shows a significant result (p = 0.00) with α = 5%. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of hearing loss is proven effective in controlling the blood pressure of workers exposed to noise in the production unit of PT Sinar Sosro, the Deli Serdang factory office.

Discussion

The results of this study provide evidence that the use of hearing protective equipment is effective in controlling the blood pressure of workers exposed to noise. The use of hearing protectors not only protects workers' hearing from noise damage, but also plays an important role in maintaining heart and blood vessel health. Good cardiovascular health is very important for work productivity and the quality of life of workers. Increased blood pressure due to noise can contribute to the risk of heart disease, stroke, and other health problems.

Conclusion

Adoption of the use of consistent hearing protectors in a noisy work environment must be a serious concern for company management. In addition, it is important for companies to provide training and education to workers about the importance of hearing health and adverse effects of noise. This will not only increase worker awareness but also reduce the incidence of hypertension and other related diseases.

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the sample size was relatively small, which may limit the generalizability of the findings. Secondly, the study only measured blood pressure and did not assess other health outcomes, such as hearing loss or cardiovascular disease. Finally, the study only evaluated the effectiveness of hearing protective equipment in controlling blood pressure and did not assess other factors that may influence blood pressure.
