Introduction

The increasing demand for tofu products has led to a significant amount of industrial liquid waste, posing a substantial threat to environmental sustainability. Anaerobic biofiltration in a fixed-bed reactor has emerged as a promising method for treating this type of waste. This study aims to investigate the effects of varying concentrations of COD influent, hydraulic residence time (HRT), and reactor medium height on the percentage of COD decreases and mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) of tofu liquid waste.

Tofu industrial liquid waste treatment is a critical issue in maintaining environmental sustainability. The use of anaerobic biofiltration in a fixed-bed reactor has been identified as an efficient method for processing this type of waste. Anaerobic biofiltration involves the use of microorganisms to break down organic matter in the absence of oxygen, resulting in the production of biogas and a reduced amount of waste. Methodology

In this study, a two-stage anaerobic reactor was applied with gravel as a filler. The variables tested include the concentration of influent COD, namely 2000 mg/L, 3000 mg/L, and without dilution, with HRT varying between 12, 18, and 24 hours, and the height of the reactor medium set at 100 cm and 125 cm. The results showed that the increase in HRT had a positive impact on the decrease in COD, although it had no significant effect on the decrease in MLSS.

Results and Discussion

This study reveals that the lower COD concentration in influent contributes to an increase in the percentage of COD and MLSS reduction. The total decrease in COD and MLSS at a medium height of 125 cm is more effective than a height of 100 cm. The best results are obtained in the use of HRT between 18 to 24 hours with an influent COD concentration of 2000 mg/L. In these conditions, the total reduction in COD reached 71.94% for the medium height of 125 cm and 59.85% for a height of 100 cm. In line with that, the ratio of MLSS reduction each also shows significant results, which is 81.37% for a height of 125 cm and 75.98% at an altitude of 100 cm.

Analysis of the Effectiveness of Processing

The selection of HRT and the exact concentration of COD is very crucial in the process of this anaerobic biofiltration. Increased HRT provides sufficient time for microbes to unravel waste, thereby increasing processing efficiency. However, although HRT has an impact on the reduction in COD, the decrease in MLSS does not show a similar reaction. This shows that although the decomposition process succeeded in reducing COD levels, the amount of suspended solids did not decrease proportionally.

The height of the medium also plays an important role; Medium with a height of 125 cm gives more space for microbes to stick and develop, which in turn increases waste decreases. Therefore, adjusting the height of the medium and the hydraulic residence can be an effective strategy to improve the performance of waste treatment.

Conclusion

This study provides a rich picture of tofu industrial liquid waste treatment through anaerobic biofiltration in a fixed-bed reactor. The results show that the optimization of operational conditions involving variations in the concentration of COD influent, HRT, and medium height can increase the efficiency of COD and MLSS reduction. Thus, this approach can be recommended as an effective method for managing the tofu industrial liquid waste, helping in efforts to maintain the balance of ecosystems and the sustainability of water resources.
