The Relationship of Coping Mechanisms of Type II Diabetes Mellitus Patients with the Effects of Insulin Injection in RSUD Dr. H. Yuliddin Away Tapaktuan South Aceh

Introduction

Type II diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder that affects millions of people worldwide, causing a range of complications, including depression and other mental health issues. Effective management of type II diabetes mellitus requires a combination of medical treatment and coping mechanisms, which are cognitive efforts and behaviors used to manage or regulate internal and external needs. This study aims to investigate the relationship between the coping mechanisms of type II diabetes mellitus patients and the effects of insulin injection they received at the Regional General Hospital of Dr. H. Yuliddin Away.

Background of the Study

Type II diabetes mellitus is a chronic condition that occurs when the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin to control glucose levels in the muscles, fats, and liver. Prolonged accumulation of glucose can trigger various complications, including depression, cardiovascular disease, and kidney damage. As a result, patients with type II diabetes mellitus require effective coping mechanisms to manage their condition and prevent these complications.

Methodology

This study used a latitude cut design and was conducted in July 2016 at the Regional General Hospital of Dr. H. Yuliddin Away. A total of 93 respondents were selected using the total sampling technique, and the results showed that 86 respondents (92.5%) used adaptive coping mechanisms, 82 respondents (88.2%) applied adaptive and problematic coping mechanisms, 87 respondents (93.5%) used coping mechanisms that focused on problem-solving, and 92 respondents (98.9%) experienced a positive effect of insulin injection.

Results

The Chi Square test revealed a value of P = 0.77, indicating that there was no significant correlation between the patient's coping mechanism and the insulin injection effect. However, further analysis of the patient's condition and health services indicates that good health services in hospitals, the presence of health insurance, and balanced spiritual conditions are important factors for patients with type II diabetes mellitus.

Discussion

The results of this study suggest that patients with type II diabetes mellitus who have undergone injection therapy for an average of five years showed an increase in self-confidence in the face of chronic and uncovered diseases. This shows that good support from the health system and spiritual environment can help patients in managing their health conditions. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of effective coping mechanisms in managing type II diabetes mellitus, including cognitive efforts and behaviors used to manage or regulate internal and external needs.

Conclusion

Type II diabetes mellitus is a significant challenge, not only for the physical health of patients but also their mental health. With a better understanding of the effective coping mechanism, medical personnel and families can provide more appropriate support, helping patients to live a better life even with this challenging diagnosis. This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge on the relationship between coping mechanisms and the effects of insulin injection in patients with type II diabetes mellitus.
