The Dynamics of Forest Farmer Groups in the Management of Community Forests: A Study in Gudang Garam Village

Introduction

Forest farmer groups (KTH) play a crucial role in the management of community forests, and understanding their dynamics is essential for achieving the success of community forest management programs. In this study, we aim to analyze the dynamics of forest farmer groups in Gudang Garam Village, Bintang Bayu District, Serdang Bedagai Regency, and explore the linkages between group dynamics and forest management.

Group Dynamics: The Key to Success

Group dynamics refer to the forces contained in a group that determine the behavior of groups and their members to achieve common goals. In the context of community forest management, group dynamics are critical in ensuring the success of forest management programs. A group with positive dynamics is more likely to achieve its objectives, while a group with negative dynamics may struggle to achieve its goals.

Methodology

This study was conducted from May to July 2014, and used the 'interval class' -based data analysis method. A total of 96 respondents, who were members of three KTH groups, namely "KTH Berkah Lestari", "KTH Makmur Lestari", and "KTH Forest Lestari", were involved in this study. Information was obtained through a closed and semi-open questionnaire with a Likert scale.

Group Dynamics Analysis

The analysis was carried out by considering nine main variables, namely:

Group Objectives: A clear group objective can increase the motivation of members and direct their efforts in the same direction.
Group Structure: A good group structure will clarify the role of each member, minimizing tension and increasing cohesiveness.
Group Task Function: A group with a clear task function is more likely to achieve its objectives.
Group Development and Development: A group that is able to develop and grow is more likely to achieve its objectives.
Group Cohesiveness: A group with high cohesiveness is more likely to achieve its objectives.
Group Atmosphere: A positive group atmosphere can increase motivation and productivity.
Tension in the Group: Tension in the group can decrease motivation and productivity.
Group Effectiveness: A group that is effective in achieving its objectives is more likely to be successful.
Hidden Intention: A group with hidden intentions may struggle to achieve its objectives.

Community Forest Management

In the management of community forests, three main indicators are identified, namely:

Planting Activities: Planting activities are critical in ensuring the sustainability of community forests.
Maintenance: Maintenance activities are essential in ensuring the health and productivity of community forests.
Harvesting: Harvesting activities are critical in ensuring the economic benefits of community forests.

Linkages of Group Dynamics and Forest Management

Positive group dynamics greatly affects success in the management of community forests. Group members who are active and have good relationships with each other will be easier to carry out planting, maintenance, and harvesting activities. This condition creates a conducive environment for the implementation of community forest programs, the results of which can be seen from the sustainability and preservation of forests in Gudang Garam Village.

Conclusion

This study shows that an understanding of the dynamics of forest farmer groups is very important in order to achieve the success of the community forest management program. By paying attention to aspects that affect group dynamics, it is hoped that forest management can be carried out in a sustainable manner and beneficial to the local community.
