Introduction

Citrus nobilis, commonly known as tangerines, is a popular fruit in Indonesia, particularly in the North Sumatra region, which is renowned for its orange production. The region boasts several collections of tangerines, including Maga, Sipirok, and Brastepu, that have garnered significant attention. Despite the high popularity of tangerines, information on their genetic diversity at the molecular level remains limited. This study aims to address this knowledge gap by collecting molecular genetic diversity data of tangerines in North Sumatra using the Simple Sequence Repeat (SSR) method.

Background

Citrus nobilis is a species of citrus that is widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions. The fruit is rich in nutrients and has various health benefits. In North Sumatra, tangerines are grown in several districts, including Sipirok, Brastepu, and Maga. The region's unique climate and soil conditions make it an ideal place for citrus cultivation. Research Methodology

This study involved the collection of 8 tangerine samples from 3 districts in North Sumatra. The samples were analyzed using 4 primers, which produced a total of 48 ribbons (bands) with a range of 100 bp to 300 bp. Of the total identified bands, 30 were polymorphic, indicating the presence of genetic variations between individuals, while 18 were monomorphic, indicating high genetic similarities between individuals.

The analysis of genetic diversity was carried out using NTSYS software, which groups samples based on similar coefficients. The results of the analysis showed that there were 3 groups formed in the similarity coefficient value of 0.74. The lowest genetic distance was found between the samples of Sibanggor Tonga and Baringin Siumuran, with a value of 0.63 or 63%. Conversely, the highest genetic distance of 1.000 or 100% occurred between Huta Namale and Huta Lombang, Aek Kambiri, and Horsic Aek.
