Introduction

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease characterized by an increase in blood sugar levels due to interference in insulin secretion. This causes various problems in carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism. Adequate knowledge about nutritional needs is very important for patients with diabetes mellitus, because it can have a significant impact on the management of their blood sugar levels. Therefore, this research was conducted to assess the relationship between family knowledge about nutrition with the nutritional needs of diabetes mellitus patients at Medan Human Rights Hospital.

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that affects millions of people worldwide. In this study, the descriptive method of correlation with a cross-sectional approach is used to analyze data. The study involved 30 respondents chosen through purposive sampling techniques, and data collection was carried out using a questionnaire or observation sheet. The data collected was then analyzed using the Spearman's Rank test. The analysis shows the value of P = 0.184, which is greater than 0.05. This indicates that there is no significant relationship between family knowledge and the nutritional needs of diabetes mellitus patients at the hospital.

The results of this study indicate that although family knowledge of nutritional needs does not seem to have a direct effect on the management of the patient's diabetes mellitus, this can be caused by several factors. One of them is the level of access to information that is owned by the family about nutrition and diabetes. Families that have general knowledge about health may not have specific information that is relevant to the nutritional needs of diabetes patients.

In addition, there is a possibility that an understanding of the nutritional needs of diabetes mellitus patients is not sufficiently applied in everyday life. Factors such as eating habits, limited access to healthy food, or lack of emotional support can also affect nutritional management in diabetes patients.
