Introduction

The oral cavity mucosa plays a vital role in protecting the oral cavity, consisting of layered flat epithelium that can be keratin or not. This layer is responsible for protection, sensation, and gland secretion contained in the oral cavity. In this context, the research conducted aims to analyze the prevalence and distribution of tongue abnormalities among students of the Faculty of Dentistry, University of North Sumatra (USU) for class 2018-2019.

Methodology

This research is descriptive and involves 102 students who experience tongue abnormalities. The selection of samples was carried out by purposive sampling technique. Data is collected through a visual examination on the tongue of the student and recorded in the medical record. The research aims to identify the prevalence and distribution of tongue abnormalities among the students, taking into account various factors such as sex, race, habits, and the presence of systemic diseases.

Results

The results of the study showed that the most commonly found tongue abnormalities were Fissors Tongue, which was detected at 40.19% (41 people) of total respondents. This finding is significant, as it highlights the high prevalence of Fissors Tongue among the students. Further analysis revealed that the majority of students who experienced Fissors Tongue came from the Deutro Melayu race, with a percentage of 14.70% (15 people). In analysis based on sex, Fissors Tongue is also found more in women with a figure of 28.43% (29 people), while men are recorded at 11.76% (12 people).

Factors Contributing to Fissors Tongue

Certain habits, such as consuming tea, also contributed to the prevalence of these tongue abnormalities, of which as many as 19.60% (20 people) from respondents with Fissors Tongue acknowledge the habit. This finding suggests that certain habits may play a role in the development of Fissors Tongue. Furthermore, this study shows that students with systemic diseases, such as asthma, have a prevalence of Fissors Tongue at 3.92% (4 people). This shows the relationship between systemic health conditions and tongue abnormalities, which can be a concern for dental and oral health workers in providing appropriate education and care.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study highlighted the high prevalence of Fissors Tongue among students of the USU Dentistry Faculty of 2018-2019, based on factors such as sex, race, habits, and the presence of systemic diseases. This finding is important to increase awareness of oral health and provide useful information for further research and the practice of dentistry in the future. The results of this study can be used to develop educational programs and interventions aimed at preventing and managing tongue abnormalities among dental students.
