The Effect of Giving Organic Materials on Growth and Production of Radish (Raphanus sativus L) in Andisol Tongkoh Karo Regency

Introduction

The provision of organic matter in the soil has become an increasingly important focus of research in increasing soil fertility and plant productivity. In this study, we aim to reveal the effect of giving organic matter on the growth and production of radish (Raphanus sativus L) in Andisol Tongkoh, Karo Regency. The research was conducted from March to May 2006 in Tongkoh, Tiga Panah, Karo, as well as in the Land Chemistry Laboratory of the Department of Soil Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra.

Research Methodology

This study uses a random design complete with two factors and three replications. The first factor in this study is the variation of the administration of organic matter, which consists of several treatments, namely:

(Co): without organic matter
(C₁): 0.5 kg of organic matter per 10 kg of dry weight
(C₂): 0.75 kg of organic matter per 10 kg dry weight of the soil
(C₃): 1 kg of organic matter per 10 kg of dry weight of the soil

The second factor involves the application of SP-36 fertilizer, KCL, and dolomite with various doses, ranging from without fertilizer up to 24.75 grams of fertilizer per 10 kg of dry weight of the soil.

Results and Discussion

The results showed that the application of organic matter had a significant impact on soil color changes, as well as increasing the concentration of organic carbon and nitrogen totaling two weeks before planting. In addition, there is a very significant increase in weight, diameter, and length of the radish at the end of the study. This shows that organic material not only contributes to soil fertility, but also directly affects the quality of agricultural products.

In terms of fertilizer application, the results show that fertilizer has a very significant effect on nitrogen totaling two weeks before planting, as well as weight, diameter, and radish length at the end of the study. However, this treatment does not indicate an effect on total nitrogen at the end of the study, which can be caused by various factors, including the process of decomposition of organic matter and the interaction between the organic matter and fertilizer used.

Analysis of Interaction

Analysis of interaction between the application of organic material and fertilizer shows a very significant effect on the C/N ratio two weeks before planting, as well as a significant effect on the length and number of radish leaves. This shows the importance of managing organic matter and fertilizer simultaneously to get maximum results in plant growth.

Conclusion

Overall, this study shows that the use of organic matter and fertilizer appropriately can increase the growth and production of radish in Andisol Tongkoh, Karo. Therefore, for farmers, it is important to consider the application of fertilization strategies that are integrated with the use of organic materials to increase agricultural products on a sustainable manner. Further research can be done to explore the types of organic matter and other combinations of fertilizer that can further increase plant productivity.
