Introduction

In today's fast-paced world, the importance of family support in the lives of the elderly cannot be overstated. As people age, they often experience significant physical, mental, and psychological changes that can lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation. Family support plays a crucial role in mitigating these effects and improving the overall quality of life for the elderly. This article discusses the findings of a descriptive study conducted in Padang Bulan Village, Medan Baru District, Medan City, which aimed to explore the relationship between family support and elderly loneliness.

The Importance of Family Support

Family support is a vital component of an individual's overall well-being, particularly for the elderly. It encompasses emotional, social, and practical support that helps the elderly adapt to their old age. Good communication between family members and the elderly is essential in establishing a strong support system. Methodology

The study employed a descriptive method, involving 66 elderly people from Padang Bulan Village, Medan Baru District, Medan City. Data was collected using a purposive sampling technique, where respondents were selected based on their willingness to participate in the study. The data collection period spanned from May to June 2015. To ensure the reliability of the research instrument, a Cronbach Alpha test was conducted, which yielded values of 0.906 for the Family Support Questionnaire and 0.754 for the Loneliness Questionnaire.

Results

The results of the study revealed that 37 respondents (56.1%) received sufficient family support, while 47 respondents (71.2%) did not feel lonely. This finding suggests that adequate family support contributes to the reduction of feelings of loneliness among the elderly. The study's results highlight the significance of family support in improving the quality of life for the elderly.
