Introduction

But, do students who join music fandom make significant progress in their English language skills? This study aims to investigate the realization of student sentences in music fandom, focusing on grammar and vocabulary errors.

Research Purpose

The primary purpose of this study is to identify the errors that arise in the use of language and understand the implications of these errors in the language learning process. By analyzing the sentences posted by respondents on social media, this research aims to provide insights into the challenges faced by students in using English grammar and vocabulary correctly. The study also seeks to understand how joining a music fandom community affects the language learning process and whether it leads to significant improvements in English language skills.

Methodology

This study employed a qualitative descriptive method to analyze the errors in sentences posted by respondents on social media. The analysis steps proposed by Ellis (2008) were used to identify and categorize the errors. The study compared the use of English grammar and vocabulary contained in sentences before and after students joined the music fandom.

Error Findings and Analysis

The results of this study revealed a number of significant grammar errors before and after students joined the music fandom. Before joining, the most common errors were in the category of be copula error (30%), followed by errors in the subject-verb, conjunction, capitalization, tenses, and several other categories. After joining the fandom, the mistakes most often found turned to the category of sentence alignment (20%), as well as spelling errors, noun use, and other categories.

In addition to grammar errors, this study also revealed problems in the use of vocabulary. Before joining fandom, most of the vocabulary errors occur in the category of error in the occasional (67%), followed by essential translation errors and blurred meanings. After joining, all student vocabulary errors are focused on the same category, namely the wrong meaning error (100%). This finding indicates that the use of Indonesian as the mother tongue has influenced their ability to learn English as a second language.

Implications for Language Learning

This error analysis provides important insights for teaching English, especially for students who have Indonesian background. Teachers need to provide a more focused and in-depth approach to help students overcome the mistakes they often make. Additional training on the use of vocabulary and correct grammar is very necessary, especially in the context of sentences that often appear on social media.

By understanding the nature and sources of errors made by students, teachers can design more effective learning programs. Through interactive and practical methods, students can more easily understand the concepts that are often misunderstood and gradually reduce errors in the use of their English.
