The Influence of Emotional Intelligence, Independence, Integrity, Competence, and Professional Commitment to Ethical Behavior in the Auditor of the Supreme Agency for Representatives of North Sumatra Province

Introduction

The role of auditors in ensuring the transparency and accountability of government agencies is crucial in maintaining public trust. However, the ethical behavior of auditors is often compromised due to various factors, including personal biases, external pressures, and inadequate training. This study aims to investigate the effect of emotional intelligence, independence, integrity, competence, and professional commitment on the ethical behavior of auditors at the Supreme Agency for Representatives of North Sumatra Province.

Methodology

This study employed a non-probability sampling technique, using a saturated sample of 188 auditors from the Supreme Agency for Representatives of North Sumatra Province. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to analyze the data and determine the effect of the independent variables on the dependent variable, which is the ethical behavior of the auditors.

Results

The results of this study showed that emotional intelligence, independence, and integrity had no significant effect on the ethical behavior of the auditors. However, competence and professional commitment had a positive and significant influence on the ethical behavior of the auditors. Furthermore, the study found that simultaneously, emotional intelligence, independence, integrity, competence, and professional commitment had a significant influence on the ethical behavior of the auditors.

Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence (EQ) is a crucial aspect of an individual's ability to recognize, understand, and manage emotions. In the context of auditing, EQ can help auditors make better decisions and interact effectively with colleagues and clients. However, the results of this study showed that EQ had no significant influence on the ethical behavior of the auditors. This may be due to other factors that are more dominant in influencing ethical behavior.

Independence

Independence is a critical aspect of an auditor's ability to act without pressure from any party, maintaining objectivity and neutrality in conducting audits. Although independence is essential in carrying out the auditor's duties, the results of this study showed that individual independence is not enough to ensure ethical behavior. There may be challenges in the practice that causes the auditor to find it difficult to maintain their independence, thus affecting their ethical behavior.

Integrity

Integrity is closely related to the morals and principles of individual ethics. Auditors who have high integrity tend not to take adverse or cheating actions. However, this study showed that integrity also had no partial significant influence on the ethical behavior of the auditors. This could be caused by the work environment that affects the values adopted by the auditor.

Competence

Competencies include the auditor's knowledge, skills, and experience. The findings that competence has a positive and significant influence on ethical behavior emphasize the importance of adequate education and training for auditors. The higher the competence possessed, the more likely the auditor to act ethically.

Professional Commitment

Professional commitment is the auditor's dedication to carrying out their duties and responsibilities professionally. This study found that professional commitment had a significant effect on ethical behavior, showing that auditors who have a strong commitment to their profession are more likely to act in accordance with established ethical standards.

Conclusion

Overall, the results of this study provide an important insight into the factors that influence the ethical behavior of the auditor. Although emotional intelligence, independence, and integrity do not show significant effects partially, professional competence and commitment are proven to play an important role in determining ethical behavior. Therefore, related agencies need to pay attention to the development of competency and professional auditor's commitment to improve ethical standards in audit practices at the North Sumatra Provincial Representative Audit Agency.
