Exploring Economic Links, Education, Health, and Unemployment with Poverty in the Nias Islands

The Nias Islands, a region in Indonesia known for its rich cultural heritage and stunning natural beauty, has long struggled with the issue of poverty. Despite its economic growth, the region continues to face significant challenges in reducing poverty rates. This study aims to investigate the effect of economic growth, literacy rates, life expectancy, and open unemployment rates on the amount of poverty in the Nias Islands. By using secondary quantitative data from four regencies and one city in the Nias Islands, this study analyzes panel data (a combination of time series and cross data) for 12 years, from 2010 to 2021.

Methodology

The analysis uses a fixed effect model (FEM) with the help of E-Views-10 software. The variables analyzed include economic growth, literacy rates, numbers of life expectancy, open unemployment rates, and poverty rates. The fixed effect model is a suitable choice for this study as it allows for the control of individual-specific effects, which is essential in analyzing panel data.

Results

The results of the analysis show that economic growth has a negative and significant effect on poverty. This indicates that increased economic growth in the Nias Islands tends to reduce poverty. This finding is consistent with the economic theory, which suggests that economic growth is a key driver of poverty reduction.

Interestingly, the literacy rate actually shows a positive but not significant effect on poverty. This indicates that although education is important, other factors may be more dominant in determining the level of poverty in this region. This finding is consistent with the literature, which suggests that education is not always a direct driver of poverty reduction.

Life expectancy has a negative and significant effect on poverty, which shows that an increase in life expectancy goes hand in hand with a decrease in poverty. This finding is consistent with the health theory, which suggests that better health outcomes are associated with reduced poverty.

Finally, the open unemployment rate has a positive and significant effect on poverty, which shows that the high unemployment rate is correlated with an increase in poverty. This finding is consistent with the labor market theory, which suggests that unemployment is a key driver of poverty.

Model Explanation

Overall, this model explains 92.17% of the relationship between economic growth, literacy rates, life expectancy, and open unemployment rates with poverty rates in the Nias Islands. The remaining 7.83% may be explained by other variables that are not included in the model.

Further Analysis

This finding shows that efforts to reduce poverty in the Nias Islands must focus on increasing economic growth and decreasing unemployment. Efforts to increase literacy rates need to be accompanied by more directed strategies to ensure their effectiveness in reducing poverty. Increasing life expectancy, which is generally associated with better health access, also plays an important role in reducing poverty.

The government and related parties are necessary to implement the following strategies:

This study provides valuable insights into the effect of economic growth, literacy rates, life expectancy, and open unemployment rates on the amount of poverty in the Nias Islands. The findings suggest that efforts to reduce poverty in the Nias Islands must focus on increasing economic growth and decreasing unemployment. Efforts to increase literacy rates need to be accompanied by more directed strategies to ensure their effectiveness in reducing poverty. Increasing life expectancy, which is generally associated with better health access, also plays an important role in reducing poverty.
