Introduction

The rehabilitation of narcotics users through therapeutic community methods has been a widely accepted approach in addressing the complex issue of drug dependence. However, the success of this approach largely depends on various factors, including the level of social support provided to the individuals undergoing rehabilitation. This study aims to investigate the relationship between social support and self-esteem in narcotics users who follow the rehabilitation of therapeutic community methods. By examining the impact of social support on self-esteem, this research seeks to provide valuable insights into the importance of social support in the rehabilitation process.

Methodology

This quantitative research study involved 101 subjects from four rehabilitation institutions, namely the Ummi House Narcotics Rehabilitation Foundation, Medan Plus Pasar VII Rehabilitation Foundation, Medan Rehabilitation Foundation Plus Lau Cih, and Rehabilitation Institute for Prevention of Narcotics Utilization Bhayangkara Indonesia (LRPPN BI). The researcher designed two scales, namely the Social Support Scale and the Self-Esteem Scale, to measure the level of social support and self-esteem among the participants. The Pearson Product Moment method was used to analyze the data and determine the relationship between social support and self-esteem.

Results

The results of this study revealed a significant positive relationship between various forms of social support, including emotional support, real support, information support, and friendship support, with self-esteem in narcotics users. This finding confirms that narcotics users who receive high levels of social support tend to have higher self-esteem. This is a crucial aspect of the rehabilitation process, as it highlights the importance of social support in rebuilding the confidence and self-esteem of individuals affected by drugs.

Further analysis of the data revealed that emotional support, or appreciation, has the most powerful relationship with self-esteem among the various forms of social support.
