Introduction

Weeds (Eleusine indica) are one of the most common and problematic weeds found in oil palm plantations. However, in recent years, controlling weeds in PTPN IV plantations, Adolina Estate, has become increasingly difficult due to the emergence of glyphosate-resistant weeds. This study aims to determine the dosage response of the suspected glyphosate-resistant weed population to three types of herbicides: glyphosate, paraquat, and glufosinate. A comparison is also made with a sensitive puzzle weed population that has never been exposed to herbicide before.

Background

Weeds are a significant problem in oil palm plantations, causing yield losses and reducing the overall productivity of the crop. Glyphosate is a widely used herbicide in oil palm plantations due to its effectiveness and ease of use. However, the overuse and misuse of glyphosate have led to the development of glyphosate-resistant weeds. This is a serious challenge in managing weeds in oil palm plantations, as it reduces the effectiveness of glyphosate and requires the use of more expensive and labor-intensive control methods.

Methodology

This study uses a random group design (shelf) with three replications for each treatment. The dose of glyphosate applied is 0, 120, 240, 360, 480, 600, and 720 g A.I. Ha-1; Paraquat with doses of 0, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, and 300 g A.I. Ha-1; and ammonium glufosinate with a dose of 0, 110, 220, 330, 440, 550, and 660 g A.I. Ha-1. The results showed that the population of weeds that were suspected to be resistant to glyphosate collected from Adolina Estate had double resistance to glyphosate and paraquat. Conversely, ammonium glufosinate can control this puzzle weed population satisfactorily.

Results

The level of resistance to glyphosate and paraquat in the alleged resistant population is seven times and 56 times compared to sensitive populations. This indicates that the population of puzzle weeds in Adolina Estate has experienced evolution and adaptation to the use of herbicides. This requires a more comprehensive and integrated weed control strategy.

Discussion

The emergence of resistance to glyphosate in puzzle weeds is a serious challenge in managing weeds in oil palm plantations. This is caused by the use of excessive glyphosate and inappropriate for years. The use of glyphosate continuously without the rotation of herbicide can cause genetic selection in weed populations to produce a population that is resistant to glyphosate.

Multiple resistance to glyphosate and paraquats in the puzzle weeds found in this study shows that the population of puzzle weeds in Adolina Estate has experienced evolution and adaptation to the use of herbicides. This requires a more comprehensive and integrated weed control strategy.
