Introduction

The kitchen is often considered the heart of the home, where meals are prepared and memories are made. However, the kitchen can also be a source of health risks, particularly for those who cook using fuels that produce pollutants. In Tamiang Village, Kotanopan District, Mandailing Natal Regency, research has shown that the type of fuel used for cooking and the kitchen conditions can have a significant impact on the respiratory system. This study aims to explore the relationship between cooking fuels, kitchen conditions, carbon monoxide (CO) levels, and respiratory system disorders in housewives in the area.

Background

The use of fuels such as firewood and kerosene for cooking is a common practice in many parts of the world, including Tamiang Village. However, these fuels produce pollutants that can have serious health consequences, particularly for those who cook for extended periods. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless gas that can cause headaches, dizziness, and nausea, and can also lead to more serious health problems, including respiratory system disorders.

Methodology

This study used an analytic design with a cross-sectional approach to explore the relationship between cooking fuels, kitchen conditions, CO levels, and respiratory system disorders in housewives in Tamiang Village. The sample consisted of 70 housewives who used wood and kerosene as fuel, out of a total population of 223 housewives. Data collection was done by analyzing various factors, including the type of fuel, the distance between the ceiling and the kitchen floor, the frequency of cooking, and the CO content in the kitchen. Data analysis was carried out using the Fisher Exact, Mann-Whitney, and logistical regression analysis.

Results

The results of this study showed that there were several variables that had a significant relationship with respiratory system disorders, including:

On the other hand, several other variables, including the type of kitchen wall, humidity, temperature, and cooking duration, did not show significant relationships with respiratory system disorders.

Discussion

The findings of this study highlight the importance of attention to environmental health in the home, particularly in the kitchen. The use of cleaner and more efficient fuels, such as gas, can help reduce CO levels in the kitchen and reduce the risk of respiratory disorders. Improvements in kitchen designs that pay attention to good air circulation can also help remove smoke and other pollutants from the kitchen space, creating a healthier cooking environment.
