Differences in the Quality of Life of Elderly who live in UPT Social Services Elderly in the Binjai and Medan Region with the Cengkeh Turi Binjai Utara Community in 2015
Introduction
The rapid progress of science and technology has had a significant impact on the quality of life of the elderly (elderly) and has extended their life expectancy. Along with this progress, the number of elderly populations in Indonesia is also increasing. To improve the quality of life of the elderly, one of the efforts that can be made is through services at the Care and Community Service Institution. This study aims to compare the quality of life of the elderly who live in UPT Social Services Elderly (PSLU) in the Binjai and Medan regions with the elderly who live in the Cengkeh Turi Village community, North Binjai.
Background
The elderly population in Indonesia is increasing, and it is essential to improve their quality of life. The quality of life of the elderly is influenced by various factors, including physical, psychological, social, and environmental domains. The elderly who live in institutions may have limited access to socialize with the outside world, even though they get more structured care. On the other hand, the elderly who live in the community usually have a better social relationship, are more active in community activities, and have easier access to public facilities.
Methodology
This study used a comparative study design to compare the quality of life of the elderly who live in UPT PSLU and in the community. The research sample consisted of 54 elderly who lived in UPT PSLU and 77 elderly who live in the community. The analysis method used in this study included Mann-Whitney test to evaluate differences in physical, psychological, social, and environmental domains.
Results
The results showed that there were significant differences in the quality of life of the elderly between those who lived in UPT PSLU and in the community (Sig = 0.004). However, when analyzed based on domain, it was found that there was no significant difference in the physical domain (sig = 0.120), psychological (sig = 0.082), and social (sig = 0.320). Meanwhile, there are significant differences in the environmental domain (Sig = 0,000) between the two groups.
Discussion
The analysis provides a clear picture of the differences in the quality of life of the elderly. The level of functioning and environmental accessibility for the elderly who live in the community can contribute to a better quality of life. The elderly in the community usually have a better social relationship, are more active in community activities, and have easier access to public facilities. Conversely, the elderly who live in institutions may have limited access to socialize with the outside world, even though they get more structured care.
Conclusion
Based on the results of this study, it is essential to continue to improve services for the elderly both in care institutions and in the community. Efforts that can be made include increasing elderly productivity, providing better health promotion, and facilitating access to health services and general infrastructure. The quality of life of the elderly is an important aspect that affects their happiness and welfare, so that the attention and development of programs for the elderly needs to be a priority in social policy.
Recommendation
Both UPT PSLU and communities such as Cengkeh Turi Village are expected to collaborate in creating an environment that supports the elderly, so that their quality of life can improve significantly in the future. This collaboration can be achieved through the development of programs and services that cater to the needs of the elderly, such as health promotion, social support, and environmental accessibility.
Limitation
This study has some limitations. The sample size was relatively small, and the study was conducted in a specific region. Therefore, the results may not be generalizable to other regions or populations. Future studies should aim to increase the sample size and conduct the study in multiple regions to increase the generalizability of the results.
Future Research
Future research should aim to explore the factors that contribute to the differences in the quality of life of the elderly between those who live in institutions and those who live in the community. Additionally, research should focus on developing programs and services that cater to the needs of the elderly, such as health promotion, social support, and environmental accessibility.
