The Effect of Teaching Competencies Lecturers and Learning Facilities on Student Academic Achievement Through Student Learning Motivation at STMIK Kaputama Binjai City

Introduction

In the pursuit of creating quality human resources, educational institutions play a crucial role in shaping the minds of future generations. One such institution is STMIK Kaputama Binjai City, which has been committed to providing an effective learning process for its students. However, the effectiveness of this process depends on various factors, including the teaching competencies of lecturers and the learning facilities available to students. This study aims to explore the effect of these factors on student academic achievements, both directly and through student learning motivation as an intermediary variable.

Research Methodology

This study adopts a quantitative descriptive and explanatory approach, supported by the survey method. The population studied was STMIK Kaputama students who were taking semesters 6 and 8 in the 2014/2015 academic year, which amounted to 207 people. Of these, 137 students were selected as samples using proportional stratified random sampling techniques. Data collection was carried out through a study of documentation and distribution of questionnaires, while data analysis uses path analysis (path analysis) to identify direct and indirect effects between the variables studied.

The Importance of Teaching Competencies Lecturers

Teaching competencies refer to the skills and abilities of lecturers to deliver effective instruction and create a conducive learning environment. Research has shown that lecturers with good teaching competencies can have a positive impact on student motivation and academic achievement. In this study, we found that lecturer teaching competencies had a positive and significant effect on student motivation. This study found that learning facilities had a positive and significant effect on learning motivation. This explains the importance of the learning environment that supports the increase in student motivation. Furthermore, this learning facility also has a direct impact on student academic achievement. This suggests that educational institutions should prioritize the development of learning facilities to create an effective learning environment.

The Mediating Role of Student Learning Motivation

Student learning motivation refers to the willingness of students to engage in the learning process and achieve academic success. This study found that student learning motivation had a positive and significant influence on their academic achievements. However, when considering the teaching competencies of lecturers and learning facilities as an independent variable, their influence on student academic achievements turned out to be stronger when seen directly, compared to through learning motivation as an intermediary variable. This shows that although learning motivation is important, the competency factor of lecturers and learning facilities has a more dominant influence.

Conclusion

From the results of this study, it can be concluded that lecturers' teaching competencies and learning facilities contribute significantly to the academic achievement of students at STMIK Kaputama. Although learning motivation has an important role in the learning process, this variable cannot be considered an effective intermediary in the relationship between teaching competencies and learning facilities for student academic achievements. Therefore, the development of lecturer competencies and improving learning facilities must be the main focus for educational institutions to improve the quality of education and student academic achievements.

By implementing these recommendations, educational institutions can improve the quality of education and student academic achievements, ultimately contributing to the creation of quality human resources.
