Relationship of Patient Safety Culture with the Implementation of Patient Safety Services at the Hospital Inpatient Installation of the University of North Sumatra in 2019

Introduction

Patient safety is a crucial aspect of healthcare services, and its implementation is essential to ensure the quality and safety of health services. The World Health Organization (WHO) has emphasized the importance of patient safety in healthcare institutions, and various countries have implemented policies and regulations to promote patient safety. In Indonesia, the Minister of Health Regulation No. 11 of 2017 has outlined the seven steps and six standards for the implementation of patient safety programs in healthcare institutions. This study aims to investigate the relationship between patient safety culture and the implementation of patient safety services at the Inpatient Installation of the University of North Sumatra Hospital in 2019.

Background

Patient safety is a complex issue that involves multiple factors, including the culture of patient safety, the implementation of patient safety services, and the involvement of healthcare professionals. A positive patient safety culture is essential to ensure that healthcare professionals are proactive and responsible in maintaining patient safety. The implementation of patient safety services, on the other hand, involves the adoption of policies, procedures, and practices that promote patient safety. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between patient safety culture and the implementation of patient safety services at the Inpatient Installation of the University of North Sumatra Hospital in 2019.

Methodology

This study used a descriptive survey method with a quantitative design involving 90 members of the health service team as a population. From this population, using the proportional random sampling technique and Slovin formula, 47 respondents were selected as samples. Data was collected using a patient safety questionnaire developed based on the Minister of Health Regulation of the Republic of Indonesia No. 11 of 2017. The questionnaire consisted of 20 items that assessed the culture of patient safety and the implementation of patient safety services.

Results

The results of the study showed a significant relationship between the culture of patient safety and the implementation of patient safety services, with the value of P <α (0.05). Most respondents (63.8%) considered that the implementation of patient safety in the hospital had gone well. This finding confirmed that there was a link between the seven steps adopted and implementing the patient safety program at the Hospital Inpatient Installation at the University of North Sumatra in 2019.

Firstly, the study highlights the importance of a positive patient safety culture in ensuring the implementation of patient safety services.
