Factors Affecting the Quality of Life of Covid-19 Survivors who Work at the Hospital of the University of North Sumatra

Introduction

The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2) virus, has had a profound impact on various levels of society around the world. Health workers, who are at the forefront in handling this pandemic, have become the most exposed group of risks. This study focuses on the survivors of COVID-19 who work at the University of North Sumatra (USU) Hospital, to understand the factors that affect their quality of life. The tools used to assess the cognitive abilities that are disturbed and the quality of life is the MOCA test and WHOQOL-BREF.

Methodology

This study uses a descriptive design with a cross-sectional approach, where data is collected through a questionnaire addressed to the survivors of COVID-19 who work in USU hospitals. The research subjects amounted to 100 people, consisting of 74 women (74%) and 26 men (26%). Most of the subjects, as many as 95 people (95%), are under 35 years old, while 5 people (5%) are over 35 years old. In terms of education, the majority of participants have an S1 educational background, reaching 78%. Most of the subjects, namely 59 people (59%), have the status as resident. Additionally, 59 people (59%) had received the COVID-19 vaccine more than once, while 92 people (92%) claimed to have been infected with the virus.

Analysis of Factors Affecting the Quality of Life

Based on the results of the study, there are several factors that affect the quality of life of COVID-19 survivors. The two main factors identified are age and BMI.

Age

Age can play an important role in the quality of one's life, especially for the survivors of COVID-19. The younger age group (under 35 years) tends to have a better adaptation level to changes caused by disease and can more easily access the information and support needed. Conversely, older individuals often face greater health challenges and may have more complications that can affect their quality of life. Younger individuals tend to have a more robust immune system, which can help them recover faster from the disease. Additionally, younger individuals may have better access to resources and support, such as family and friends, which can help them cope with the emotional and psychological impact of the disease.

Body Mass Index (BMI)

BMI is a health indicator that can affect various aspects of life. In the context of COVID-19 survivors, research shows that those who have normal BMI tend to have a better quality of life compared to those who are overweight. Being overweight can affect the immune system and make individuals more vulnerable to the long-term effects of COVID-19. Overweight individuals may experience more severe symptoms and complications, such as respiratory problems and cardiovascular issues, which can affect their quality of life.

Conclusion

This study shows that age and BMI are significant factors that affect the quality of life of COVID-19 survivors who work at the Hospital of the University of North Sumatra. Understanding of these factors is very important to design better interventions in order to support the health and welfare of health workers, especially during the post-Pandemic recovery. With the right approach, it is hoped that survivors can enjoy a better quality of life and be able to continue their role in the world of health.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Health education: Health education programs should be implemented to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining a healthy weight and lifestyle, especially for health workers who are at high risk of contracting COVID-19.
Screening and monitoring: Regular screening and monitoring of health workers' BMI and other health indicators should be conducted to identify those who are at risk of developing complications.
Support and resources: Health workers who are survivors of COVID-19 should have access to support and resources, such as counseling and rehabilitation programs, to help them cope with the emotional and psychological impact of the disease.
Policy and legislation: Policies and legislation should be implemented to protect the health and welfare of health workers, including providing them with adequate resources and support to prevent burnout and maintain their quality of life.

Limitations

This study has several limitations, including:

Small sample size: The sample size of this study is relatively small, which may limit the generalizability of the findings.
Cross-sectional design: The cross-sectional design of this study may not allow for the identification of causal relationships between the variables.
