Introduction

In today's competitive academic environment, student organizations play a vital role in providing a platform for students to develop their skills, leadership, and teamwork. However, recruiting new members is a challenging task for many student organizations. Effective communication strategies are crucial in attracting and retaining members. This qualitative descriptive study aims to explore the communication strategies implemented by the Padangsidimpuan City Student Association (IMACOPASID) in recruiting new members at the University of North Sumatra.

Relevant Theory

Communication is a vital aspect of any organization, and effective communication strategies are essential in recruiting new members. The theory of communication, communication strategies, and organizational communication are relevant to this study. According to communication theory, effective communication is a two-way process that involves the exchange of information between the sender and receiver (Berger & Luckmann, 1966). Communication strategies refer to the methods used to convey messages to the target audience (Kotler & Keller, 2016). Organizational communication involves the exchange of information within an organization, which is essential for effective decision-making and problem-solving (Daft & Lengel, 1986).

Research Methods

This study used a qualitative descriptive approach to explore the communication strategies implemented by IMACOPASID in recruiting new members. Purposive sampling was used to select informants who were familiar with the organization's communication strategies. In-depth interviews were conducted with 10 informants, including the organization's leaders and members. Literature studies were also conducted to provide a comprehensive understanding of the organization's communication strategies. Data analysis was performed using the Miles and Huberman models, which involved coding, categorization, and data presentation.

Research Results

The results of this study showed that IMACOPASID implemented several effective communication strategies to recruit new members. These strategies included:

Knowing the audience: IMACOPASID made efforts to understand the characteristics and needs of prospective members, which enabled them to convey relevant and interesting messages.
Arranging messages: The organization used language that was easy to understand and interesting, which attracted the attention of students to join.
Using social media: IMACOPASID effectively used social media platforms to reach a wider audience, considering that most students are active on these platforms.
Ease of recruitment: The organization made it easy for prospective members to join without significant obstacles, which facilitated the recruitment process.

Analysis

The results of this study suggest that effective communication is the key to recruiting new members. By understanding the audience and using the right media, IMACOPASID was able to attract students to join their organization. The ease of recruitment process also supported the active participation of students. The involvement of students in the organization is not only beneficial for the organization itself but also provides valuable experience for students in developing organizational skills, leadership, and teamwork.

Conclusion

This study provides valuable insights into the communication strategies implemented by IMACOPASID in recruiting new members. The findings suggest that effective communication is essential in attracting and retaining members. Student organizations can learn from IMACOPASID's experience and develop their own communication strategies to remain relevant and effective in recruiting new members. By understanding the audience and using the right media, student organizations can create a positive and engaging experience for prospective members, which can lead to increased participation and retention.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Develop a comprehensive understanding of the target audience: Student organizations should make efforts to understand the characteristics and needs of prospective members to convey relevant and interesting messages.
Use effective communication channels: Organizations should use language that is easy to understand and interesting, and consider using social media platforms to reach a wider audience.
Ease the recruitment process: Organizations should make it easy for prospective members to join without significant obstacles, which can facilitate the recruitment process.
Continuously evaluate and improve communication strategies: Organizations should regularly evaluate and improve their communication strategies to remain relevant and effective in recruiting new members.

Limitations

This study has several limitations. The sample size was small, and the study was conducted at a single university. Future studies should aim to recruit a larger sample size and conduct the study at multiple universities to increase the generalizability of the findings.

Future Research Directions

Future research should aim to explore the communication strategies implemented by other student organizations to recruit new members. Additionally, studies should investigate the impact of effective communication on student participation and retention. By understanding the communication strategies used by student organizations, researchers can provide valuable insights into how to improve recruitment and retention rates.
