Nephrotic syndrome (SN) is a common kidney disease found in children, characterized by proteinuria, hypoalbuminemia, edema, and hypercholesterolemia. Hematological parameter examination plays a crucial role in assessing the risk of infection and thromboembolism in patients with SN. This study aims to investigate the relationship between hematological parameters and serum albumin and cholesterol levels in children with nephrotic syndrome.

The primary objective of this study is to assess the correlation between hematological parameters and serum albumin and cholesterol levels in children suffering from nephrotic syndrome. This study employed a cross-sectional approach at Adam Malik Haji Hospital, Medan, North Sumatra, from February 1, 2017 to December 1, 2017. A total of 65 children diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome were included in the study, with 49 meeting the inclusion criteria. The inclusion criteria consisted of children with SN relapse and resistant to steroids, without severe malnutrition, and with normal liver function. Pearson and Spearman correlation tests were used to analyze the relationship between hematological parameters and albumin and cholesterol levels.

The study sample consisted of 31 boys and 18 girls, with 43% having good nutritional status and 6% in the malnutrition category. The analysis revealed that 37.7% of patients experienced SN relapse, while 63.26% were patients with SN resistant to steroids. Blood Sediment Rate (LED) (r = -0.29; p = 0.039)

In addition, platelets showed a positive correlation with cholesterol levels (r = 0.44; p = 0.001).

Conclusion

The study found a weak negative correlation between leukocytes, platelets, and blood sedimentation rates with albumin levels. Platelets also indicated a medium negative correlation with cholesterol levels. This hematological parameter examination can help healthcare professionals better understand the risk of infection and thromboembolism in patients with nephrotic syndrome.
