The Effectiveness of Picture Card Media and Leaflets in Increasing Knowledge and Attitudes of Small Doctors in Prevention of Dengue Fever in Helvetia Tengah Village, Medan Helvetia District in 2015

Introduction

Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is a disease that can appear at any time throughout the year and can affect all age groups. This disease is closely related to environmental factors and community behavior. Efforts to prevent and control DHF require health promotion, especially for risky individuals, such as children at elementary school level. Health education about DHF is very dependent on community participation in prevention efforts. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of educational media, such as picture cards and leaflets, in increasing the knowledge and attitudes of "small doctors" (the term for students who are trained to become agents of change in health) related to DHF prevention in Helvetia Tengah Village, Medan Helvetia District, on 2015.

Background

Dengue fever is a significant public health problem in many parts of the world, including Indonesia. The disease is caused by a virus that is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. The symptoms of dengue fever include high fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, and rash. In severe cases, dengue fever can lead to dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF), which is a life-threatening condition. The prevention and control of DHF require a multi-faceted approach that includes health education, vector control, and early detection and treatment of the disease.

Methodology

This study uses the Quasi-experimental method with pre-test and post-test designs. The research subjects are all "small doctors" in all elementary schools in Medan Helvetia District. Data was collected through direct interviews and analyzed using the Wilcoxon test at a 95% confidence level. The results of the analysis showed that both leaflet media and picture cards were effective in increasing the knowledge and attitudes of "small doctors" about DHF prevention. In addition, media leaflets have proven to be more effective compared to picture card media in achieving this health education goal.

Results

The results of this study showed that both leaflet media and picture cards were effective in increasing the knowledge and attitudes of "small doctors" about DHF prevention. The use of leaflet media resulted in a significant increase in knowledge and attitudes among "small doctors" compared to the use of picture card media. The results of the analysis are presented in the following table:

The results of the analysis showed that both leaflet media and picture cards were effective in increasing the knowledge and attitudes of "small doctors" about DHF prevention. In addition, media leaflets have proven to be more effective compared to picture card media in achieving this health education goal.

Discussion

The importance of health education about DHF cannot be ignored. In this context, the use of appropriate media is the key to increasing students' understanding of ways to prevent disease. Media leaflets, which usually include clear and concise information, as well as interesting images, are able to attract the attention of students and make it easier for them to understand the information conveyed. Meanwhile, the picture card offers a visual approach that can help students remember important information about DHF prevention.

The results of this study have several implications for health education and promotion. Firstly, the use of leaflet media and picture cards can be an effective way to increase knowledge and attitudes among "small doctors" about DHF prevention. Secondly, the use of media leaflets may be more effective compared to picture card media in achieving this health education goal. Limitations

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the study was conducted in a single district, which may limit the generalizability of the results. Secondly, the study only used two types of media, leaflet and picture card, which may not be representative of all types of media. Finally, the study only measured knowledge and attitudes among "small doctors" and did not measure behavior change.
