Introduction

Seismic data, a non-stationary signal with varying frequencies and time, plays a crucial role in understanding the phenomenon of earthquakes. This signal is produced by elastic disorders that propagate through the earth, providing valuable information about the characteristics of tectonic earthquakes, including the time of arrival and strength. The analysis of seismic data is essential for predicting and mitigating earthquake disasters. In this study, we used a continuous wavelet transformation to decompose seismic signals based on frequency, allowing the determination of the arrival time and the strength of the earthquake.

Background

Seismic data is a complex signal that contains various frequencies and time information. The analysis of seismic data is challenging due to its non-stationary nature. Traditional methods, such as Fourier transform, are not suitable for analyzing seismic data because they are based on the assumption of stationarity. In contrast, continuous wavelet transformation is a powerful tool for analyzing non-stationary signals. This method allows researchers to decompose seismic signals into different frequency components, enabling the identification of the time of arrival and the strength of the earthquake.

Methodology

In this study, we used a continuous wavelet transformation to decompose seismic signals based on frequency. We analyzed the seismic data of the Tarutung regional tectonic earthquake that occurred on May 19, 2008. The analysis was carried out using four types of wavelets: Gauss 4, Mexh, Morlet, and Haar. The results show that Wavelet Mexh provides a better image resolution compared to other wavelets. This is indicated by a smaller scale, which means the wavelet is shortened and a higher frequency.

Results

The seismic signal analysis with Wavelet Mexh shows the arrival time of the primary wave (P) on the GSI sensor ranging from 1800 MS with the maximum amplitude localized at 2000 ms. On the side sensor, the arrival time of the primary wave (P) ranges from 3000 ms with a maximum amplitude localized around 4500 ms. Meanwhile, in the PSI sensor, the arrival time of the primary wave ranges from 3500 ms and the maximum amplitude is localized around 4500 ms.

Discussion

The results of this study indicate that continuous wavelet transformation is a powerful tool for analyzing seismic data. This method allows researchers to identify the time of arrival and earthquake strength accurately, as well as increasing understanding of the characteristics of tectonic earthquakes. The application of this method in seismic studies has great potential to increase the prediction and mitigation of earthquake disasters in the future.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study demonstrates the effectiveness of continuous wavelet transformation in analyzing seismic data. The results show that Wavelet Mexh provides a better image resolution compared to other wavelets.
