As a crucial component of their diet, food plays a vital role in determining the growth and development of animals. Therefore, research on the chemical content of Sumatran Orangutan food is essential to determine the quality and safety of the feed they consume.

Background

The Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo Abelii) is one of the most endangered species in the world, with a population estimated to be less than 14,000 individuals. The main threat to their survival is the loss of their habitat due to deforestation and land conversion. In addition, the quality and safety of their food sources are also a concern. As a result, it is essential to conduct research on the chemical content of their food to ensure that they have access to quality feed sources.

Research Methodology

This study focuses on the chemical analysis of three types of fruits commonly consumed by orangutans at Sikunda Research Station, Aceh Tamiang, namely Halaban Fruit (Vitex Pinnata), Forest Pandanus Fruit (Pandanus Sarasinorum), and Stipic Fruit (Balakata Baccata). The research process begins with drying the three types of fruit until it reaches a fixed weight, then mashed into a natural dry powder form. Furthermore, this dry material is extracted by the method of maceration for 3x24 hours. The results of this macical filtrate are then analyzed using the Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GCMS) gas tool.

Results

The results of the analysis showed the presence of one compound identified in the three feed extracts, namely N-HEXADEKANOAT (C16H32O2). This finding suggests that these compounds can be a factor that affects food preferences by Sumatran orangutans. N-HEXADEKANOat is known to have a variety of biological activities, including antialopia, antiAndrogen, antifibrinolytic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antifungal. This activity not only supports orangutan health but also plays a role in improving the quality of feed they consume.
