Introduction

Phytoplankton, the primary producers of aquatic ecosystems, play a crucial role in converting solar energy into chemical energy that can be utilized by other organisms. This study aims to investigate the relationship between primary phytoplankton productivity and physical and water chemical factors in the Asahan River mouths.

Methodology

The research was conducted in August 2009, using purposive random sampling to determine the point of observation station. Three different locations were studied, each with three water depths. Primary productivity was measured using the Winkler method, while chlorophyll A concentration was measured by a spectrophotometer.

Results

The results showed that the primary phytoplankton productivity value varies between 150,144 to 375,360 mgc/m³/day. Station 3 recorded the highest productivity value, while station 2 recorded the lowest value. However, statistical analysis did not show a significant difference between primary productivity values at various stations or at various depths.

Correlation Analysis

Correlation analysis between physical factors of water chemistry, chlorophyll concentration, and the abundance of phytoplankton indicates a very strong and positive correlation.
