Introduction

The coastal area of Asahan Regency is a dynamic region, comprising nine villages, including New Silo, New Sei Pematang, Sei Buoyo, Asahan Dead, Asahan Bagan, Sei Tempurung, Sarang Helang, Sei Sembilang, and Bangun Baru. As a transitional zone between land and ocean, this coastal area is highly susceptible to changes, both physically and ecologically. This study aims to analyze changes in coastlines and land cover that occur in the Asahan coastal area.

Methodology

In this study, researchers employed the coastline overlay method using Landsat 5 satellite imagery data from 2006 and Landsat 8 oil from 2016. This method was followed by a classification of land cover using a guided classification approach and suitable monograms for the North Sumatra region. The researchers used satellite imagery to analyze changes in coastlines and land cover, providing a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics in the Asahan coastal area.

Results

The results of this study showed that between 2006 and 2016, there was a significant change in coastline. Abrasion occurred in an area of 58.28 hectares, while accretion recorded an additional area of 106.55 hectares. This indicates the presence of complex dynamics along the coastline. The analysis of land cover revealed a significant decrease in the reduced area of dry land agriculture by 1530.80 hectares and forests that shrunk to 726.92 hectares. This area of decline suggests a shift in land use that may be caused by economic development, urbanization, and climate change affecting agricultural productivity and forest sustainability.

Discussion

The increase in the area of plantation by 741.02 hectares indicates that farmers and business actors switch to plantation businesses, perhaps in response to market demand and more promising economic potential. However, this also raises questions about the environmental impact and long-term sustainability of land conversion. The results of this study highlight the importance of sustainable space planning to maintain coastal ecosystems. Collaboration between the government, researchers, and the community is essential to face the challenges that exist and maintain the sustainability of the coastal area of Asahan Regency in the future.

Conclusion

The study emphasizes the need for stakeholders, including local governments and local communities, to consider mitigation steps and adaptation to changes that occur. Sustainable space planning must be a priority to maintain coastal ecosystems. Education and socialization need to be carried out in a sustainable manner to increase community understanding of the importance of maintaining the coastline and land cover. Thus, the community can play an active role in maintaining and preserving the coastal environment, which is a source of life and livelihood for them.
