Introduction

In Indonesia, the mining sector is a significant contributor to the country's economy, and companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) are subject to various tax regulations. This study aims to analyze the effect of profitability, family ownership, and corporate governance on tax avoidance in manufacturing companies in the mining sector listed on the IDX between 2017 and 2019.

The data analysis process was carried out using SPSS version 25 software. The independent variables analyzed were profitability, family ownership, institutional ownership, independent commissioner, and audit committee, while the dependent variable observed was tax avoidance, measured using Cash Effective Tax Rate (CETR).

Results

The results of the analysis showed that profitability, family ownership, institutional ownership, and corporate governance did not have a simultaneous influence on tax avoidance. However, when analyzed partially, only family ownership showed an influence on tax avoidance, while profitability, institutional ownership, and corporate governance had no effect.

Discussion

The results of this study provide important insights into the dynamics of tax avoidance in the mining sector in Indonesia. Family ownership was found to have a significant influence on tax avoidance, which may be due to the greater control that family-owned companies have over decision-making, including tax-related decisions. This suggests that family-owned companies may be more aggressive in tax strategies to protect family long-term interests and increase company value.

On the other hand, high profitability was not found to be directly proportional to tax avoidance. This may be caused by the fact that more profitable companies are often under tighter supervision by regulators, so they tend to choose to comply with applicable tax provisions. Additionally, tax avoidance can potentially harm a company's reputation, which is a consideration for companies with high profitability not to be involved in the practice of tax avoidance that can damage their image in the public's eyes and stakeholders.

Corporate governance plays an important role in the management and transparency of financial statements. A good governance mechanism can reduce the possibility of tax avoidance, as stakeholders have greater access to company information, which encourages accountability. However, this study shows that in the context of the company under study, corporate governance does not show a significant effect on tax avoidance. This may be caused by the lack of implementation of effective corporate governance practices in these companies.
