Introduction

In the era of globalization, the development of modern markets has significantly impacted the traditional market landscape in Indonesia. The emergence of modern markets such as Thamrin Plaza has changed the way people shop and conduct business. This study focuses on the influence of Thamrin Plaza on traditional market traders and surrounding communities in Sei Rengas II Village, Medan Area District. The research aims to understand the impact of modern markets on traditional markets and the community, and to identify strategies to maintain the economic sustainability of traditional traders in the face of increasing competition.

Background

The city of Medan is one of the major cities in Indonesia, known for its vibrant markets and bustling streets. The traditional market in Medan has been a hub for traders and consumers for decades, offering a wide range of products and services. However, with the emergence of modern markets such as Thamrin Plaza, the traditional market has faced significant challenges. Thamrin Plaza, a modern shopping mall, has attracted many consumers with its modern facilities, amenities, and services. The presence of this modern market has had a significant impact on traditional market traders, who have reported a decline in sales turnover, profits, and number of employees.

Methodology

This study used a mixed-methods approach, combining both qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis methods. The research involved 79 respondents, including traditional market traders who had been selling before Thamrin Plaza and people who sold under 1989. The respondents were selected using a random sampling method, and the data was collected through surveys and interviews. The analysis method used included the average difference test for paired samples and descriptive analysis.

Results

The results of the study showed that the conditions of facilities and infrastructure at Thamrin Plaza were far better than the traditional market. The modern market offered better electricity, water, cleanliness, comfort, and security facilities, which were attractive to consumers. However, the presence of this modern market had a significant impact on traditional market traders. The traders reported a significant decline in sales turnover, profits, number of employees, and physical sales after Thamrin Plaza began to operate. This decline shows that the modern market is able to attract more consumers, which has a direct impact on the economic conditions of traditional traders.

Discussion

The analysis in this study revealed that changes in sales turnover and physical sales have a significant positive influence on changes in the profits of traders' business in the crowded market. However, diversification of products that may be carried out by traditional market traders actually has a significant negative impact on their business profits. This indicates that although traders try to adjust by offering various products, they are still unable to compete with the various advantages offered by Thamrin Plaza.

Conclusion

The impact of the existence of modern markets on traditional market traders in Medan Area District is very complex. On the one hand, the modern market offers better and attractive facilities for consumers, but on the other hand, this has the potential to burden the economy of traditional traditional traders. Therefore, an effective strategy is needed from the government and the community to develop traditional markets in order to continue to compete and contribute to the development of the local area. Initiatives such as market revitalization, business management training for traders, and traditional market promotion can be the first step in maintaining the economic sustainability of traditional traders in the midst of increasingly fierce competition.

Synergy between Modern and Traditional Markets: The government and the community should work together to create a synergy between modern and traditional markets, so that both can contribute optimally in the development of the regional economy in Medan Area District.
