The Influence of Mother's Characteristics, Family Support, and Attitudes of Health Workers on the Completeness of Basic Immunization in Babies at Puskesmas Pining, Gayo Lues Regency

Introduction

Basic immunization is a crucial step in maintaining the health of infants and children. Through immunization, their bodies are protected from dangerous diseases from birth. However, in Pining District, Gayo Lues Regency, the basic immunization rate is still very low, only reaching 38 babies or 64.41%. This figure is far from the target set at 90%. This study aims to analyze the influence of the characteristics of the mother, family support, and the attitude of health workers on the completeness of basic immunization in infants in the working area of Puskesmas Pining.

The Importance of Basic Immunization

Basic immunization is a vital public health intervention that has been proven to be effective in preventing infectious diseases. It is a critical component of primary healthcare, and its success depends on various factors, including the characteristics of the mother, family support, and the attitude of health workers. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that all children receive basic immunization, which includes vaccines against diseases such as tuberculosis, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, and measles.

Research Methodology

This study uses an analytic descriptive method with cross-sectional design. Primary data is collected through direct interviews with respondents using the prepared questionnaire. While secondary data were obtained from the profile of the Pining District Health Center, monthly records at the Puskesmas, and Posyandu notes between villages. With this method, it is hoped that a significant relationship can be found between the characteristics of the mother, family support, and the attitude of health workers towards the completeness of the baby's immunization.

The results showed that there were three variables that had a significant effect on the completeness of basic immunization, namely:

Attitudes of Health Workers

The attitude of health workers is a critical factor that influences the completeness of basic immunization. A positive attitude of health workers contributed greatly to the completeness of immunization. That is, if the health worker is friendly and proactive, then the mother will be more encouraged to complete their baby's immunization. The regression coefficient of 3.374 and a significance value of 0.001 indicate a strong positive relationship between the attitude of health workers and the completeness of immunization.

Family Support

Family support is another critical factor that influences the completeness of basic immunization. The variable family or husband's support shows a regression coefficient of 1,932 with a significance value of 0.040. This indicates that her husband's involvement and family support are very influential on the mother's decision in carrying out immunization. Family support can provide emotional and financial support to the mother, enabling her to access and complete the immunization schedule.

Work

The type of mother's work can also affect access and ability to bring the baby to immunization. The job variable has a regression coefficient of 1,445 with a significance value of 0.075. Although the effect is not as strong as two previous variables, the type of mother's work can influence her ability to access and complete the immunization schedule.

Recommendation

Based on the results of the study, there are several recommendations that can be taken:

For Health Workers

It is expected that health workers will continue to show a friendly attitude and provide counseling about the importance of basic immunization to the mother. This will help increase awareness and knowledge of mothers about immunization.

For Mother

It is expected that mothers to actively ask health workers about immunization and the importance of the completeness of immunization for babies. By increasing knowledge, the mother can explain to her husband about the importance of immunization.

For Husband

Husband should provide moral support to the wife and give permission to carry out complete immunization to the baby. Support from the husband is very important in making decisions about children's health.

Conclusion

The completeness of basic immunization in infants is strongly influenced by various factors, including the characteristics of the mother, family support, and the attitude of health workers. Joint efforts from all parties, both families and health workers, are needed to achieve the expected immunization targets and maintain the health of future generations. By understanding the factors that influence the completeness of basic immunization, we can develop effective strategies to improve immunization coverage and protect the health of infants and children.

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the study was conducted in a specific area, Pining District, Gayo Lues Regency, and may not be generalizable to other areas. Secondly, the study relied on self-reported data, which may be subject to bias.
