Introduction

Soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) are one of the most widely cultivated legumes in the world, providing a rich source of protein and other essential nutrients. However, soybean production is often threatened by various environmental stresses, including salinity. In recent years, researchers have been exploring the potential of antioxidants to enhance soybean resistance to salinity. This article discusses a study conducted by Ida Rumia Manurung in 2017, which aimed to investigate the effect of various types and concentrations of antioxidants on the fourth generation soybean physiology in saline conditions.

Research Methodology

The study was conducted in several locations, including plastic houses, research and technology laboratories, and plant physiology laboratories at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of North Sumatra, Medan. The superoxidase dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase dismutase (POD) enzymes were recorded at the highest in the treatment of ascorbic acid with a concentration of 250 ppm, which shows good antioxidant potential in overcoming oxidative stress.

Additionally, the study found that the enzyme ascorbate peroxidase (APX) reached the highest value in the treatment of alpha tocopherol 750 ppm, which plays an important role in the defense mechanism of plant against stress.

The study also showed that although there were negative impacts, plants still tried to adapt to the saline conditions. The discovery that the 500 ppm ascorbic acid treatment produced the highest average hydrogen peroxide and carotenoid content suggests that plants may have developed mechanisms to cope with oxidative stress. Additionally, the study found that the treatment of alpha tocopherol 250 ppm showed the best results in terms of chlorophyll content, which is closely related to the ability of plant photosynthesis.

The study also showed that the highest average for potassium (K) and sodium (Na) ratios was obtained in the treatment of 250 ppm salicylic acid. In conclusion, this study shows that although there is no significant influence on various antioxidant treatments on the fourth generation soybean physiology, there is a lot of valuable information related to various physiological indicators that can be used to increase understanding of soybean resistance to salinity. This research makes an important contribution to the development of soybean varieties that are more resistant to adverse environmental conditions.
