The Influence of Toddler and Mother's Characteristics and Maternal Behavior on the Incidence of Acute Respiratory Infections in Toddlers in the Mother and Child Hospital of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Province in 2008

Introduction

Acute respiratory tract infections (ARI) are a common health issue affecting toddlers worldwide. In the Mother and Child Hospital of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Province, data from the Children's Polyclinic recorded 47 ARI cases in children between January and July 2008. This study aims to analyze the influence of the characteristics of mothers and toddlers, as well as maternal behavior on the events of ARI in the RSIA Banda Aceh, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Province.

Methodology

This study uses a survey approach with exploratory research methods. The research population includes all toddlers treated at the Banda Aceh RSIA Polyclinic, with 120 toddlers chosen as a sample. Inclusion criteria include toddlers aged 12 to 60 months, who live in Banda Aceh, and have been treated in RSIA more than once between September and November 2008. The data obtained are analyzed using multiple logistics regression tests at a 95% confidence level.

Results

The results showed that 32.5% of toddlers treated at the NAD Province RSIA Polyclinic experienced ARI. Variable Maternal Work Status (P = 0.008; OR = 3,556), Nutritional status (p = 0.021; OR = 2,550), immunization status (p = 0.005; OR = 0.330), and maternal practice (p = 0.041; OR = 2,256) has a significant influence on the events of ARI in toddlers.

Analysis of the Effects of Mother and Toddler Characteristics

The study found that the status of the work of the mother has a significant impact on ARI events. Mothers who work tend to have limited time to care for and supervise children's health, which can cause children to get less attention and proper care, including in terms of cleanliness and nutrition, which has the potential to increase the risk of infection.

In addition, nutritional status also plays an important role. Toddlers with malnutrition status have low endurance, so it is more susceptible to infection, including ARI. In this case, it is essential for parents, especially mothers, to provide good nutrition to support the immune system of toddlers.

Immunization is another factor that is no less important. Toddlers who do not get complete immunization are more likely to experience infection. Therefore, awareness and knowledge of mothers about the importance of immunization are needed to protect children from various diseases.

The practice of mothers in caring for children is also a determinant. Mothers who understand how to maintain children's health and apply preventive practices such as maintaining cleanliness, providing nutritious food, and routinely checking children's health will be able to reduce the events of ARI.

Recommendations for Health Improvement

From this finding, it was recommended to the Banda Aceh Health Office to evaluate the ARI handling policy. This includes improving health promotion programs, nutritional programs, and immunization programs in hospitals. Good cooperation and coordination between RSIA and Puskesmas and the Health Office is very important to implement the ARI prevention program effectively.

By paying attention to the characteristics of mothers and toddlers, as well as increasing the behavior of mothers in caring for children, it is hoped that the events of ARI in toddlers can be reduced, so that the health of children in Banda Aceh can be more guaranteed.

Conclusion

This study highlights the importance of considering the characteristics of mothers and toddlers, as well as maternal behavior in reducing the incidence of ARI in toddlers. The findings of this study provide valuable insights for healthcare professionals, policymakers, and parents to develop effective strategies to prevent ARI in toddlers.

Limitations of the Study

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the sample size is relatively small, which may limit the generalizability of the findings. Secondly, the study only focuses on the characteristics of mothers and toddlers, and does not consider other potential factors that may influence the incidence of ARI.
