Lignolytic Mushroom Capability in the Forest Area of Mount Barus in Decolorizing Azo Textile Coloring Agents

The textile industry is one of the rapidly developing sectors in Indonesia, with a significant increase in export values and textile products. However, this growth is accompanied by an increase in waste production, including textile dyes that can pollute the environment. Azo type coloring is one of the most widely used and known to be degraded by the environment. This study aims to determine the potential of lignolytic mushrooms isolated from the Mount Barus forest area in decolorizing Azo textile coloring, especially Reactive Red-141.

Background and Significance

The textile industry is a significant contributor to Indonesia's economy, but it also generates a substantial amount of waste, including textile dyes. Azo type coloring is a common dye used in the textile industry, but it is known to be resistant to degradation and can pollute the environment. The use of living organisms such as mushrooms is an alternative solution that is environmentally friendly for managing textile industry waste. Lignolytic mushrooms, as found in the forest of Mount Barus, have the natural ability to degrade complex organic compounds, including Azo dyes.

Methodology

In this study, there were three mushroom isolates used, namely ERN1, ERN2, and ERN5. The results of the Bavendamm test show that the three isolates are capable of producing chocolate deposits, signifying the process of decolorization. The decolorization test was carried out on MSM media both in solid and liquid form that had been added to the textile coloring. The three isolates show the ability to decolle coloring with a concentration of 200 ppm.

Results

Of the three isolates, ERN2 isolates show the best results in terms of the percentage of decolorization. At a concentration of 50 ppm of textile dyes and mushroom inoculum concentrations of 10% observed on the 15th day, ERN2 was able to reach the percentage of decolorization of 45.99%. This finding shows that ERN2 isolates have significant potential as bioremediation agents to reduce pollution of Azo textile coloring agents in the environment.

Analysis of Lignolytic Mushroom Potential

Lignolytic mushrooms have the natural ability to degrade complex organic compounds, including Azo dyes. This decolorization process occurs thanks to the presence of enzymes produced by fungi, such as ligninase and peroxidase manganese, which can break the chemical structure of coloring. This is important because Azo dyes are known to be resistant to degradation, so the use of living organisms such as mushrooms is an alternative solution that is environmentally friendly for managing textile industry waste.

The success of ERN2 isolates in reaching the highest decolorization level also shows that the selection of the right concentration, both for fungal coloring and inoculum, is the key to maximizing the effectiveness of this process. By increasing understanding of optimal conditions, further research can be done to explore the potential of this fungus on a larger scale, as well as in testing other types of coloring.
