Introduction

The livestock industry plays a vital role in meeting the needs of the community, particularly in terms of providing meat for consumption. In Panyabungan District, there are two animal slaughterhouses (RPH) operating with traditional cutting methods to cater to the demands of the local community. However, the process of slaughtering animals raises concerns about animal welfare, which is a critical aspect that needs to be addressed. This study aims to analyze the level of knowledge of the officers at the Panyabungan RPH and also apply aspects of animal welfare in the process of slaughtering animals.

Background

The livestock industry is a significant contributor to the economy of many countries, including Indonesia. However, the industry is also associated with animal welfare concerns, particularly in the process of slaughtering animals. The slaughter process can be a source of stress and pain for animals, which can have negative impacts on their health and well-being. Therefore, it is essential to ensure that the slaughter process is carried out in a humane and respectful manner.

Methodology

This study was conducted between May and July 2023 using qualitative descriptive research methods. The research was conducted in two RPHs located in Panyabungan District, Mandailing Natal Regency, North Sumatra. The two RPHs studied were the RPH owned by Mr. Zuljapri located on Jalan Sibaroar Lintas Western and the RPH owned by Mr. Jacob Nasution in Adian Jiior Village, Panyabungan District.

Results

The results of this study showed that overall, the knowledge of livestock traders and supervisors regarding aspects of animal welfare was in the very good category. However, the knowledge of the slaughtering of slaughtering techniques still does not meet the standards set for halal slaughter. This shows the need to improve training and understanding for the slaughter so that they better understand the aspects of animal welfare during the cutting process.

The application of aspects of animal welfare in several stages of the slaughter process in the two RPHs still shows the existence of activities that are not in accordance with the standards. For example, in the process of receiving animals to slaughter, there are significant differences between the two locations. The RPH, located on the West Cross Road, shows a better percentage of application than the RPH in the village of Adian Jior. This may be caused by differences in facilities, training, and awareness about the importance of animal welfare among the officers.

Analysis and Recommendations

Analysis of the results of this study illustrates the importance of ongoing education for RPH officers, especially slaughtering. Good knowledge about appropriate slaughtering techniques and aspects of animal welfare can improve the quality of the slaughtering process and the final results of the meat obtained. Instead, local governments and authorities increase training programs and seminars on animal welfare involving RPH officers and livestock traders.

It is essential to set a tighter standard for the slaughtering process to ensure that all RPHs apply good practices in accordance with the principles of animal welfare. This will not only help improve the quality of meat produced, but also creates awareness in the community about the importance of good treatment of animals.

In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of animal welfare in the livestock industry, particularly in the process of slaughtering animals. The results of this study show that there is a need to improve the knowledge and application of aspects of animal welfare in the Panyabungan RPH. Therefore, it is recommended that local governments and authorities increase training programs and seminars on animal welfare involving RPH officers and livestock traders.

Recommendations for Future Research

Future research should focus on the development of a more comprehensive training program for RPH officers and livestock traders on animal welfare. Additionally, research should be conducted to identify the factors that contribute to the differences in the application of aspects of animal welfare in the two RPHs studied.

Limitations of the Study

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the study was conducted in only two RPHs, which may not be representative of all RPHs in Panyabungan District. Secondly, the study relied on qualitative descriptive research methods, which may not provide a comprehensive understanding of the issues related to animal welfare in the livestock industry.
