The problem of waste has become a national issue that never ends. Reducing the volume of waste at the household level can be done by applying the 3R principle (reduce, reuse, recycle) and involving the active role of housewives. This study examines the application of waste management with the 3R principle as an effort to reduce the volume of waste in Labuhan Deli Village.

Background of the Study

The issue of waste management is a pressing concern in many parts of the world, including Indonesia. The increasing amount of waste generated by households, industries, and communities has put a significant strain on the environment, leading to pollution, climate change, and other negative impacts. In Indonesia, the problem of waste is particularly acute, with the country generating over 65 million tons of waste per year. The majority of this waste is household waste, which is often disposed of in an improper manner, contributing to the country's environmental problems.

Methodology

This study used a descriptive survey method to examine the application of waste management with the 3R principle in housewives in Labuhan Deli Village. The survey was conducted among 100 housewives in the village, who were selected using a random sampling method. The survey instrument consisted of a questionnaire that collected data on the respondents' demographic characteristics, waste management practices, and awareness of the 3R principle.

Results

The results of the study showed that the majority of respondents were housewives aged 55-56 years (37.8%), the latest elementary school (51%), earning under Rp. 3,000,000 (63.3%), female sex (72.4%), and has less than 5 family members (77.6%). The average household waste produced in 6 days was 397.5 kg or every day produces 0.676 kg/day and 0.166 kg/person/day. Organic waste dominated with a percentage reaching 90%, while inorganic waste was only 10%. The most composition of waste was food waste reaching 83.3%.

The application of the 3R principle in waste management was analyzed based on the respondents' practices and awareness. The results showed that:

This shows that some housewives have begun to apply the principle of reuse, but it still needs to be improved. *** Recycle: *** The application of the principle of recycle to most housewives was relatively low, namely 96 housewives (98%). This shows that knowledge and access to recycling facilities is still an obstacle. *** 3R Overall: *** Application of the overall 3R principle to most housewives was relatively low, namely 88 housewives (89.8%). This shows that awareness and understanding of the importance of the 3R principle in reducing the volume of waste still needs to be improved.

One of the main obstacles to the application of the 3R principle in waste management is the low public awareness of the importance of waste management. Lack of knowledge about how to sort waste, the benefits of recycling, and legal sanctions related to waste disposal is also an inhibiting factor. To overcome these obstacles, the following solutions can be implemented:
