Introduction

The production and trading of onions in Silahisabung District, Dairi Regency, have been a significant contributor to the local economy. However, the complex channel structure and margin distribution between farmers and traders have raised concerns about the efficiency and fairness of the trading process. This study aims to analyze the pattern of shallots, prices, and efficiency patterns in the onion trading in Silahisabung District, Dairi Regency, and to identify the challenges and opportunities for improving the trading process.

Background

The study was conducted between November 2013 and January 2014, and it focused on the onion trading in Silahisabung District, Dairi Regency. The researchers selected the study area purposively, considering it representative of the region. A total of 85 farmers were sampled using the simple random sampling method, and 9 collecting traders, 2 large traders, and 15 retailers were also included as additional samples. Various analytical methods were applied to gain a deeper understanding of the pattern of shallots, prices, and efficiency patterns.

In this study, descriptive analysis was used to clearly describe the pattern of the traffic channel as well as the functions of each trading institution. The results showed the existence of two main trading channels:

Farmers → Collecting traders → retailers → end consumers
Farmers → Gathering Traders → Large traders → retail traders → end consumers

With this channel, the process of distribution of shallots from farmers to the end consumers can be better understood.

Furthermore, the margin analysis of the trading was carried out to compare the selling prices received by farmers with the purchase price of consumers. This analysis is very important, because it provides an overview of how much the benefits of each party in the tract of the tract. The results of the margin of the trading show that there is an inequality in the distribution of profits, which has the potential to harm farmers.

Price Transmission Analysis

This efficiency is important because it shows that the costs incurred for product distribution are optimal and there is no significant waste in the process of buying and selling shallots.

From the results of the study, it can be concluded that the onion trading in Silahisabung District, Dairi Regency, has a complex channel structure, but efficiently. Nevertheless, there are still challenges in terms of margin distribution between farmers and traders. Increasing farmers' awareness of market prices and strengthening their bargaining positions in the tract is the key to ensuring a more just profit for all parties. The existence of regulations and support from the government in the form of training or counseling is also needed to improve the bargaining position of farmers, so that they are not only observers in the market. With the right approach, it is expected that the onion trading can provide greater benefits for farmers and the community as a whole.
