Introduction

In today's digital age, online news newspapers have become a primary source of information for people around the world. The way news is presented and conveyed to readers is crucial in shaping public opinion and influencing social reality. Experiential function, a key component of the ideational function, plays a vital role in forming a representation of the meaning of experience. This study aims to analyze the experiential function in online news newspaper language and explore how journalists convey ideas in news writing.

Background

The study of language and its functions has been a significant area of research in linguistics. Functional systemic linguistic theory, introduced by Halliday, provides a framework for analyzing the meaning of language using the transitivity system. The transitivity system consists of three main components: participants, processes, and circumstants. This study adopts the functional systemic linguistic theory to analyze the meaning contained in online news newspaper language.

Methodology

This study employed descriptive qualitative methods to collect and analyze data. Purposive sampling techniques were applied to determine the analysis data, where three news articles chosen from online news newspapers were the main source of data. The data analyzed was a clause of the three news texts in social rubrics published in January 2016.

Research Findings

The research findings show that the relational process dominates with 25 processes, which is equivalent to 40.32%. This is followed by material processes that reached 24 processes or 38.70%. Meanwhile, the verbal process was identified as many as 8 processes (12.90%) and the mental process was 5 processes (8.06%). These data show variations in the way journalists use various types of processes to convey information to readers.

Translation Version Analysis

In the translation version, the author found a change in process. These changes include materialization, in which non-material processes are translated into material processes, and dematerialization, which is the opposite of materialization, where the material process is translated into non-material processes. In this analysis, 4 data materialization and 3 data were found, which showed that in making an equal translation version, changes in the process may be needed to maintain the desired meaning.

This study provides in-depth insight into the use of experiential functions in online news media, especially in language news. By understanding how journalists apply the transitivity system in news writing, we can see how the news is formed and how the meaning is conveyed to the reader. This analysis is not only relevant for academics who study linguistics but also for journalists and news writers who want to improve the quality of their writing.

Conclusion

Overall, this study shows that the structure of language not only serves to convey information but also builds broader social reality. Therefore, awareness of the experiential function in writing news is important to explain the events and issues that occur in the community. Through this analysis, it is expected that the reader can be more critical of the news method presented and how meaning can vary depending on the choice of language used.

Finally, the study only analyzed the data from January 2016, which may not be representative of all time periods.
