Comparison of the Effectiveness of Neostigmin 0.5 mg and Neostigmin 1 mg Intramuscular for Emptying of the Bladder after Spinal Anesthesia

Introduction

Through this study, it is expected to find optimal doses that can be used in clinical practice.

Methodology

Of the total samples obtained, there were 37 patients who received neostigmin 0.5 mg and 37 patients who received neostigmin 1 mg intramuscularly. The measured parameters are the volume of urine released in the initial observation (T0) and Final Observation (T5). This measurement aims to assess the effectiveness of the two doses in accelerating the emptying of the bladder.

This study used a random clinical trial design to compare the effectiveness of neostigmin 0.5 mg and neostigmin 1 mg intramuscularly in accelerating the bladder emptying process after spinal anesthesia. The study was conducted at two hospitals in Medan, Indonesia, and involved a total of 74 patients who received either neostigmin 0.5 mg or neostigmin 1 mg intramuscularly.

From the observations made, the group that received a 0.5 mg neostigmin shows the average initial urine volume of 133.51 cc and reduced to 63.51 cc in the final observation. The results of statistical analysis showed the P value of 0.000, which means there is a significant difference in the volume of urine between initial and end observations, indicating that this dose is effective.

On the other hand, groups that receive neostigmin 1 Mg also show significant results with the same P value (0,000), showing a clear difference in the speed of urinating between the two groups. Overall, the group that gets a neostigmin 1 mg has a faster work onset than the group that receives 0.5 mg.

Conclusion

From the analysis conducted, it can be concluded that neostigmin 1 mg is more effective in accelerating post-spinal bladder emptying compared to 0.5 mg neostigmin. These findings have important implications for clinical practices, especially in determining the optimal dose of neostigmin to minimize the retention of the post-spinal anesthetic procedure. Thus, this study provides valuable insight to medical personnel in managing post-anesthesia patients.
