Introduction

Materials and Methods

The study used a Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) to analyze the thermal properties of the isocyanate wood adhesive mixture with eucalyptus powder. The isocyanate was mixed with wood powder in a concentration variation of 5%, 7%, 10%, 12%, and 15% based on the weight of isocyanate. The mixing process was carried out manually using a glass spatula until the mixture looked physically homogeneous. After that, the mixture was allowed to stand at room temperature for 48 hours to form a film, which functions as an adhesive simulation on the particle board. The resulting film was then analyzed using DSC.

Results

The results of the analysis showed 4-6 peak temperatures (TP) on an isocyanate mixture and wood powder. This peak temperature shows that the adhesive has experienced a good ripening process. From observations, the 5% powder content produces the highest peak temperature value, which is 367.09 °C, while the 15% powder level gives the lowest peak temperature value, which is 359.41 °C. This shows that the concentration of wood powder can affect the curing process in isocyanate adhesive.

Activation Energy Analysis

In further analysis, the activation energy value (EA) is calculated using the Kissinger method. In addition, the isoconversional method is also applied to provide a comparison of EA values. The results show that along with increased levels of wood powder, the EA value tends to decrease. The EA value obtained through the Kissinger method shows consistency with the value obtained from the isoconversional method, with a conversion rate between 0.05 to 0.55.
